Here you will see students as young as 4 and 5 years old doing algebra and "advanced" math, without ever knowing it's supposed to be hard.
You are invited to learn how to use this method...

Getting A Feel For Numbers

This is a simple exploration of ten. You can do it with all the numbers, but here a five year old is getting some basic information about 10. Ten is two fives, we have already built tens out of nine and one, eight and two etc...so we "know" a ten can be made of two fives, now we can see it can also be made out of five twos....

Just to make sure we put the fives on the twos and see they are exactly the same...

Then we lined them up and counted and compared.

We can do this with twelves and fifteens etc...

This is counting that sets up for multiplication...note we aren't even using symbols yet, just the blocks.

  1. Just came across your site. Wow, cool stuff, I plan to attempt to implement some of it with my Algebra class. And with my 4 year old son!

In connection with this post, I recently taught my son a new version of "Go Fish". Instead of asking for matches that are the same as the number, matches are two numbers that add to 10. He loves it and knows all the pairs easily. Today we played "Go Fish Nines", matching nines, lots of fun watching him recognize the pairs that go together.
