JUST PLAY BLOCKS



People also always ask me, what do you mean "just play with base ten blocks?" Just what I said.

This isn't rocket surgery: just play blocks when they are little kids (roughly 8 and under but even teenagers can have fun and learn math just playing with blocks but then it moves to a reward and free time, with the little kids especially 5 and under it's pretty much ALL free time and sing songs ). And DON'T over do it by asking ALL of the questions listed 'at once' or in the same session...they should be "natural" questions. You may also take note of the child or student as they are building; they may say something like, "I need 4 fives...two for each of the smaller ships." For little kids that's 4 divided by 2...and BTW how much is four fives? 5x4.

You could sing songs...whisper count, just skip count...whatever. Keep it simple and fun.

How many twos on the big ship? Five. Let's count them, 2,4,6,8,10.

Hey how many three's is that on the super duper laser cannon turret? . And what shape is that? Square.

A fast lesson square root should be obvious and natural.

What's 40 plus 40? 80. If you had to use fours how many would you need? 20. Way easier to just grab two 40's huh...?

If you make a cube out of 3's how many units would be in it? 27. Hey look instead of writing 3x3x3 we could write 3³--that's called economy of symbol.


What's 60 plus 60? 120. Wanna get crazy and count 120 by sixes? NO. lol Do it anyway. Lets see if we can find a pattern to make it easier.


You can also see a calc lesson had gone on before this where we learned about doughnut factories and water tanks.

A lesson on square roots of numbers like 2 and 3 can be seen at the nose of the big ship where we wrote out quite a few places. It's all math.

This came from Kirk's Tutoring, who also uses this method.   I assume the student was given free time but gee, seems a lot of questions could be asked about his too...also note the symmetry and the observations that could be made here, and they could even just start with what the word "symmetry" means. Which is a very complex concept for the 6 and under crowd but there it is shown clearly.

The work here was building a cube of hundreds made out of addends for 10. Then the kid "splendified"  it by adding some hundred squares and the pyramid of multi tens on top.
This is a freighter with huge engines so it can get cargo from planet to planet FAST. 
Here is a building with a monorail going by it.  I thought it was a house with a fence but the little girl who built it set me straight. and she asked for some help flushing up the blocks,  Note the addends for 4 and 9, and of course we counted by sevens, just so she could hear the pattern.  7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49...how many seven is 35? Did you hear THIRTY-TWO...? They should say something like no, but I heard FORTY-Two. Did you hear 15 or 18? No but I did hear 14...etc.

He called Mortensen More Than Math for a reason. Imagination, fine motor skills AND math are developed by playing with these blocks. This page was to give you ideas...NOT BLUEPRINTS.

These need to be turned into little booklets with instructions on how to build them (kinda like those booklets you get with Lego kits) and some observations that can be made while doing so...

The problem I have with doing books like this is that some of you (not all of you) will ONLY build the ones you see in the books ONLY ask the questions I list etc. You have to play and be creative; these are just examples , a vague framework from which you can get ideas and then allow your kids to be creative...and build whatever they want. As they build talk about what they did. Use some symbols to show we can use numbers to "talk" about what they did (express reality numerically). And using mathematical symbols is a WHOLE lot faster than English or whatever language other than mathematics you speak.

Base Ten Blocks For First Grade

I like this kid because so far every time he comes neither of us can believe how fast an hour goes by, and he's only six, in first grade. Base Ten Blocks make the math fun and easy...here are a couple of excerpts from our classes. These are good training for parents and teachers because they are great examples of the teaching concepts...remove the no from the lesson, degree of difficulty, placing the child in a situation where they can not fail, use of the rectangle to make it easy to count, addends and a general algorithm for counting past ten, introduction of algebra right away...



Tasking is not fun if the task assigned is no fun. He likes to play MineCraft, and builds stuff on his tablet and home computer. This is like building in MineCraft but specifically designed to teach math.  When they are in first grade math should be fun and easy. It should also be conceptually based. Symbols can wait. The same way we don't make very young children write English as they learn English there is no need to introduce symbols right away and in public schools they emphasize writing math way too early in my opinion.  They nead to hear the language and get fundamental concepts that they can see and get their hands on, symbols tend to muddy the waters and take away from clarity at this age and they really slow things down. Later when they see the symbols that stand for the numbers and operations they've heard it makes sense.



These videos show how to do it. Remember at this stage of the game all he is doing is counting and I am teaching him to discover how to count for himself...and how to say what he has done. We are basically figuring out how to count more quickly and easily. The brain WANTS to work fast but at this age it lacks training. But rather than drill facts I am showing him ways to count quickly. We also drop the algebra in right away.   Listen for the discoveries.



Little kids like math.  It's fun for them except when you make their hands hurt from so much writing.  You can see for yourself all the math facts he is getting consciously and subconsciously (and that is where the bulk of the learning takes place).

If they have Autism EVEN MORE emphasis on FUN is required.

More on the MAKE IT FUN theme. Here are couple of vids where we play math and the math portion is done many times because it's fun to shoot the walls down. They will do it over and over again because knocking down the walls with a Nerf gun is FUN.

These kids are having fun and the little boy you see there is only 5...note that the NO is removed from the lesson and he is encouraged to try and see if the pieces fit to make ten...ask questions: Is that tall enough...is that too short etc...build tens and nines and eights.


Out of an hour this was only a small portion of the math we did...this boy Tamu has Autism and is a little shy, but as you can see he is quite able to join in the fun. The idea is to keep the games quick and not to spend too much time on drill. They will get math facts as a matter of course.

Here what you see is us building a house for a lego craft. I also couldn't bring out the camera much because as soon as I did the dynamic changed, and as I have said before the first obligation is to the parents who are paying me money to teach their child. We also had fun building walls and shooting them but I didn't get these guys on camera.

As it turned out this was just the beginning of a large house...which I also didn't get on camera. Tamu got a lot of math facts presented to him and had fun while it happened. Many more exposures will be required before he "knows them" but this is a good start and the repetition is fun not drudgery.



We also did multiplication as well as addends for other numbers but most importantly we kept it fun and engaging. People always ask me how do you make math fun? Just play math.

Seriously. Get out your blocks and fool around, especially when the children are young. You just play and point out math concepts to them as you go. Simple things like a three and a four is the same as a seven...three 3's is square and the square root is 3...that means count one side...etc. Later when they see symbols the explanations make sense...

Make Math FUN



I think one of the most common questions I get is how do I make math fun? Well make math play and learning playFUL. Make a game of it. EVERYBODY like games. I have lots of posts about making math fun and interesting.

And another one where we play with monomials and play find the ones which makes it fun instead of scary. This child happens to be autistic but it doesn't matter and little kids like this game too.

Making a game of it is the beast way to make it fun...followed closely by incorporating it into everyday (math) activities. If you make it into a game all manner of things come into play, the students natural competitiveness will come out and everybody likes to get good at games so they can win at games. If you are smart you will make sure even the losers are winners...

You can teach some math with playing cards but you can also teach math by making up a game from whatever it is you just learned. Making it up together is the best way or having them come up with ideas like this video on polar coordinates where we brainstorm ideas for games (you have to skip to the end).

I once did a training in Utah where the homework over the week end was to come back with at leaste one math game...we had about 50 people in that training and we got well over 50 games and activities from Pre-school to "high school" algebra. If you are new here you might wonder why I have quotations around high school, the rest of you know it's because any little kid can do that algebra and they think it's FUN.

I have students on video begging me for algebra...because the way we do it IS FUN. It's like solving a puzzle. I guy who used to work for AMD figuring out why an AMD processor ran software differently than an Intel processor used those exact words...it's like solving a complex puzzle...and of course the way they solved it was with math. BTW he loved his job and was paid several hundred thousand dollars per year to do it. This is the attitude you have to instil in your students. That math is fun, and beautiful, and joyful...and when they think of math they are crying or conjuring up images of mental torture. I often make popcorn in my classes. The reason for this is manyfold.

First and foremost: I love popcorn. But so do most students and it gives them a positive association with math and me and my tutoring. Especially little kids. The smell of popcorn is associated with fun times...I am not above Pavlovian conditioning.

It doesn't have to be about smells and food although using M&M's or grapes or cookies or whatever snacks you like for addition and subtraction won't hurt anything. But making a game of the math itself is better yet...racing can also make a game of it when you separate kids into teams...I have even used this on video chat where one group is "live" with me and the other group is on the east coast...and they race to factor polynomials...we ended up going and extra half hour. Meantime the kids were literally squealing with excitement. You can create this same atmosphere in your classroom. You probably don't want to do it everyday but maybe once a week on Friday as a reward if they've been good.

Homeschoolers can get together once in a while and have family races where one group of kids gets together with one or more others. Use your imagination. Playing with the blocks makes math fun, but you can make math fun by making a game to ensure they attain mastery of whatever topic it is...often times the game they make will let you know how well they understand the related topic.

Here is a lesson you can use over and over again and make math fun while making the concepts understandable. Too many kids are confused by a whole year of multiplication and then a whole year of division and don't understand that they are indeed inverse functions. How you can separate the two is beyond me...

This is part of a long video (49 minutes it can be found here) and I edited down a little...the idea is you get a real time feel for what happens in a lesson. There's no magic to it you just play math and try and keep it fun. Part of having fun is removing the NO from the lesson. A lot of parents need to work on that...teachers too.




This is a compound lesson where we do multiplication, division, square roots, and word problems as well as area and addends, as well as integers watch as we move fluidly from one topic to the next...these boys are 5 and 7.

Problem Solving Concepts Made Easy


Note that depending on age the emphasis changes...for the older girls it's about the concepts and seeing the rules they have been taught, for the younger students it's about finding same and building addends.

The basic concepts are hero zero and no fun get back to one...but it's all about using those to find same and SEE what x is...the equals sign tells us what x is...and x can be anything depending on the problem.

For all of them it's about making it easy and fun. Let's start with older students:



Now as is typical of many high school math students, they have yet to master multiplication and resort to fingers when adding. I will get them off their fingers and they will have to master multiplication on their own...

Then Watch a six year old doing basically the same thing, CONCEPTS are the same. (BTW it's a piece of organic all natural endangered species chocolate which he picked out from the health food store.)



And the older kids (begin to) SEE the rules:



They are hampered by a mental paradigm that math is hard even when it's this easy...it takes a while for them to realize really math is easy; but when that shift happens the math becomes easy and with or without me A's can be achieved. In the vid we did not evaluate for x = 6 but I did so with them and with Dboyz who figured out that 30 plus 3 is the same as 18 plus 15...and they were quite proud of their skip counting skills...counting by 6's all the way to 30 with the younger boy in the lead. When doing 18 plus 15 they knew five wants to be ten so it takes a five from the 8 leaving 3 tens and three...they also did 8 takes the 2 from the five and again we get 3 tens and 3...lots of DO-able math for kids of all ages. 10 years from now this will be old hat for some students. More to come on the problem solving page at the house of math...the question will come up, how do you do a problem like this?

3x - 2 = 2x + 5...there's no -2 in five. True. You need hero zero again, none of this balancing stuff...you just see same on both sides.

Or

5x + 3 = 2x - 12 again many people can't see same on both sides...that's because of hero zero again. Want a detailed explanation? You need a password. PPPSP = The Password Protected Problem Solving Page.



There are tons of different problems on the PPPS and vid that make them ALL super easy. Remember those boat and current problems? Or how about constant rate problems? AND of course the ones you see here where you might think it's not same on both sides because things got negative...just a few minutes and you will see your way clear...

I have heard from a student that has since moved to the mainland that she is getting A's for the first time in math...all I did was adjust her thinking and hand her some concepts she can use no matter what the topic...beliefs are powerful things. She now believes math is easy...she knows it...so of course she's getting A's. I don't need to be there. And that's the point of all this.

Another Fun First Grade Math Activity

There are plenty of games you can play that teach math.  At Crewton Ramone's House of Math there are pages of them. The page called "how to teach addition" has a bunch of games for addition but there are games for multiplication and algebra and more on my site and here on this blog. I put fun first grade math activity in the title but it could just as easily be a fun preschool math activity or a fun kindergarten math activity.


This is a story Jerry Mortensen came up with for teaching addends below ten...the numbers are having a party. Addends* are quite important and help students with many other aspects of mathematics (like subtraction). They are a basic building block that so many systems skip completely.



With little kids you want to play math...not drill math, and you need to play it enough so that they attain mastery and have instant recall. 2 + 2 = 4 is instant for most kids but 4 + 3 can take a a little longer and then 7 + 5 takes longer than that and they may resort to fingers. Get them off their fingers...but you start on their fingers.

There are only 45 addends in all. They should be mastered but don't spend all your time just doing addends, play other math games, do multiplication, sing songs, do algebra, fractions, problem solving etc. WHILE you are mastering addends...and all of these topics can be used TO master addends...and multiplication. Math is a language: it all goes together.

This idea of segmenting it down into individual parts that never become a cohesive whole ISN'T working.

*Addends: two numbers added together that make up another number. 7 + 3 are addends of 10 for example.
