Moving on with Manipulative Multiplication


Two weeks later we revisit multiplication as we make are way through the 20x20 matrix. The idea is not just to be able to do multiplication with symbols or blocks but to be able to do the multiplication quickly and easily in your head. In order to do this we need to be able to organize our thought and count very rapidly.

Manipulatives expedite this. The mind wants to work rapidly.  The device it uses is the brain. Brain and mind are not same, just like computation and mathematics are not same. Computation is how we DO math. Mind uses brain, brain does not use mind. But I digress.

As I am doing this video I try to impart some concepts not just on the students but on the adult viewers who may be parents or teachers. Concepts like the stages to competence. Do you see the blend of drawing symbols and base ten blocks? Driving home the point that "no" needs to be removed from the lesson. I was going to make the point that they are building neuro-pathways and now that we know some neurophysiology, you understand it takes a little bit of time for the child to form the thoughts and then vocalize them.  When they learn new things this takes up a lot of the brain and it takes a few seconds for the brain to process and compute and then make the information available for the mind verbalize. We are faster because the pathways have already been built. We are also going to use repetition to make the information available for instant recall and store it in the long term memory, but we are going to have FUN doing it. No muss, no fuss, no tears, no need for endless worksheets and drill.

The idea that the partial products model was supposed to be a way to help you count and organize thought and that it was a stepping stone to understanding multiplication and doing it fast was interrupted. Mortensen math uses the term "split and shift" to show this. Manipulatives illustrate partial products superbly, BUT here is a faster easier way to go about multiplication counting the big ones FIRST.

Already getting very positive feedback for this vid. People are stunned and amazed because one of the students is "only" six.



 I make one error in this presentation I expect you will see it easily but it doesn't slow us down or make a difference to the lesson. The blocks show 18x13 when I am doing 18x12 with the symbols. There are a couple of other subtle errors I caught while I was watching this, perhaps if you find them you can put them in the comments below. Lets see if YOU are paying attention, LOL.

Problem is, things got a little muddled along the way and many students get bogged down in the algorithm and instead of it unleashing speed it actually hobbles them. As you can see I am training them to go left to right. Count the big stuff first, understand that we're counting hundreds then tens and then units...adding them up is SUPER EASY IF you understand your addends. The youngest boy needs some practice with addends. He is going to build pyramids NOT do worksheets.

Since this first post we have maybe practiced this for an hour over two weeks. Maybe. There has not been drilling or worksheets, there has been some play (playing algebra and building math towns and such) and some practice. Soon we will make a game of practicing all 400 facts.

Note the order...first we get single digits facts mastered. Then we do the single digit times two digit facts. WHILE we are doing this, we have been building squares all the way out to 20x20. This helps us practice addends, addition and single digit multiplication. We have played with 11's (and nines) so those are easy. Also played with 12's. As we do this we are now also doing two digit by two digit which of course includes square numbers, 11's, 12's and the "easy ones where the tens addends add up 100, which are 11x19, 12x18, 13x17, 14x16 and 15x15. We can play with the little one like 12x13 and all those where there are no tens "hiding" first. These are great for building confidence with the little kids because it makes them feel like they are doing big kid math.

Concurrent and compounding lessons make all the difference.

Note that concurrently with learning addends, addition, and multiplication they are learning algebra which reinforces this...and also fractions, percentages and problem solving. You will also see compound lessons on square root and and the concept of square numbers tossed in as a matter of course.

I think you will agree they are making fine progress. And this is the way it works first you crawl, then you walk then you can jog and pretty soon you can run where you used to stumble and fall.

I hope you can hear the excitement. So much energy that many times I don't get to complete my thoughts...math learning should be FUN not done in silence to the scratching of pencils.

A Little Geometry, Triangles, and counting to 180.


Some simple concepts regarding triangles and 180...This student up until quite recently found triangles to be confusing and stupid.  But with a little directed discovery and explanation things very rapidly started making sense.  Geometry is often easy for visual learners because they can see it...this is not a primarily a visual learner,  this is a kinesthetic learner. He is good at sports and the reason he showed up in the first place was because if he got an F they wouldn't let him play.

"If you can count to nine tell me if something is same or different or not and identify a rectangle I can teach you math if you want to learn it...and you need to be able to speak a language preferably English." Is basically how our lessons started and at first he was incredulous. After an hour triangles were EASY. Now we just have to work on the negative associations he has built up over the last two years...he got a D in algebra and hated it. I showed him problem solving and factoring and he was hooked.

Next we will mix in a little algebra...this vid also brings home the fact that knowing your addends by heart makes a BIG difference. Concepts build on concepts and skill sets build on skill sets...soon instead of "2" they will put something like 4x - 20 there. And the student will have to figure out that 4x - 20 = 80.   Which is a snap if they understand problem solving concepts but just adds to the confusion if they just got a "D" in algebra and hate it and none of makes sense. In this video a student I am tutoring discovers that the stuff he thought was hard might not be so hard as long as he can count to 180. The angles of triangles always add up to 180 and using a little logic and reasoning we see why the exterior angle and the two non-supplementary angles add up to 180 degrees. I did a lesson already using directed discovery so that he was able to pretty much figure that out for himself he just couldn't elucidate it well so I showed him using some symbols and it really started making sense. This student is a little camera shy and as with all students, tends to behave a little bit differently when the camera is on which adds a little pressure. This is another student that was in danger of not being able to play sports because of his math grade and apparently he's pretty good at baseball...and does "ok" in his other classes except, of course, math.

From what I can see he is indeed a kinesthetic learner and once he gets his hands on the blocks a lot of math problems fade away. (Do you see what I did there? I crack myself up.)

angles of triangles, angle measures, geometryNow we are ready for a "complicated" problem like this on to the left. Looks like it might be tricky but again if you can count to 180 it's not very hard. Turns out it's just two problems stuck together.  Suddenly it's pretty easy except for the part that he sees a problem like this and automatically runs a program in his head that this is hard...but then it turns out to be easy and the program is modified. Soon he will be able to understand even poor explanations because he will be running a program called "this is easy I can do this."

The geometry wasn't making any sense to him nor were the explanations he was getting from his teacher, so he quit paying attention and this turns into a loop that ends with an "F." BTW he tells me probably 90% of his peers are bombing tests and getting poor grades. I'm pretty sure the teacher is just as frustrated if not more than the students.

Anyhow, once he starts understanding basics concepts and the generic ideas all they can do is switch the numbers...and test scores go up dramatically....and people think Crewton Ramone is magic. But it's not magic it's just math....and knowing when to start counting to 180....

A little Q&A with Crewton Ramone.

Dear Crewton,
I have been browsing your website for a while and I love your approach to teaching maths. I have two young children, the youngest is two and a half, and the other one almost five. I found a small set of manipulatives second-hand, and together we've been playing around a bit with them. I have sometimes difficulty finding a good balance between introducing new insights and making sure it all sinks in and they're fluent with it (I am so afraid I will bore them that I tend to charge ahead). So, with the eldest just having started school, I was looking for some tools to bring a bit more structure to our sessions, and to have some materials to make it feel a bit more like 'real' school (he's so keen it's almost funny).

So, I was thinking of ordering a curriculum starter kit, but I had a few more questions. Firstly, have you any idea how long international shipment would take? We're based in Ireland, so virtually the opposite side of the globe. If that boat is taking 6 weeks to reach the west coast, god knows how long before it reaches these shores. We do have friends living in the states (Texas) who are planning to visit us over Thanksgiving. Would priority shipment to their address still be feasible?

Another question I have is what the range of material is that is included in the curriculum starter kit. What kind of ground does it cover compared to school. Is it first grade, or first and second grade? Or does it go further? Mind you, part of the appeal of your approach, I feel, is that it is so different from the way things are being approached in primary school. The more I can keep the disconnect, the better!

Finally, beyond 'straight counting' (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) where can the visual approach with manipulatives be taken further to? You eloquently demonstrate basic algebra, such as polynomial multiplication and factorization. But what about, say, geometry? To what level has the Mortensen math approach been elaborated? At what point are students meant to join the mainstream approach? With so young children, this is not an immediate concern, obviously! But I'm just curious where this path leads to over the horizon. :)

Okay, I think the best way would be to priority mail it to Texas which would take about a week and then they could just bring it with them...however you have to make sure they search it ahead of time and then tape it shut because if they open it TSA is probably not clever enough to close it back up properly...there is no international parcel post anymore, you have your choice between expensive and really expensive. Send me your address and I'll get you a quote...

At that age lots of repetition is required and you play a lot of the same games over and over again...there a host of games and even the pdf of the games and activity manual...play them, different activities and building projects keep it fresh and fun...play until they know it without symbols then introduce pictures, then symbols the same way they learn to read English...

Very hard to compare the traditional method of grade levels with Mortensen because we teach them math concepts from day one which include algebra and problem solving...once you understand math and can decode the symbols you can see how the basic concepts apply to what they call higher mathematics...I have students bring their text books all the time and then show them with blocks what the symbols mean and WHY they learn the rules and process that they do.

With some creativity and imagination there is very little the blocks can't show...counting through calculus. The Geometry in found in the measurement books. And the books cover many math concepts but certainly not all of them. However it has been my experience that with the firm foundation it gives the math becomes easy and understandable, especially when approached with a "can do" attitude. Students can jump in and out of the mainstream approach with ease...because they can see what they are doing and what the symbols mean.

I have struggled with math for so many years, and I have only recently begun to enjoy math and slowly, but surely I am beginning to see how simple even the most complex math problems can be. I am tutoring an adult student GED math with strategies and methods from Crewton Ramone’s House of Math. She doesn’t know most of her multiplication tables and has a difficult time retaining information. With help from theh CR website, I am able to teach her area, squares and square roots, percents, ratio and proportion, and solving 2 step algebra equations WHILE she learns her times tables.

Also if it's drop shipped by mortensen co it can take a week or two...but often if you order Monday you'll have it by Friday or the following Monday.


Hi again Crewton,
I have two daughters ages 8 and 9 that I homeschool and I am in need of a good math program. Question: Does Mortensen Math work well even if I do not consider myself a math type? I am one of those countless females who were told at a young age that "girls aren't any good at math" and believed it. But I do not want my girls buying into the same lie. And I am really having a difficult time deciding which direction and curriculum to go with this. Last year someone recommended Rod and Staff to me and that was a big mistake. My oldest never did learn how to subtract very well from it.

And my other daughter has only been here with us from China for 10 months now and recovering from orphanage trauma, also having never gone to school before a day in her life until now.
